Massive weight loss, age and multiple pregnancies can sometimes make breasts more than just saggy– but flat. In cases like these, special measures are needed to plump those breasts back up again. Breast implants alone aren’t the answer, since their purpose is to add volume, not to address excess skin. But a new technique called the spiral flap may offer a “no implant” answer.
The procedure uses unwanted fat from other areas of the body, such as the abdomen, and forms it into a new breast mound. The breast mound is held into place with a sling-like tissue sheet or “spiral flap” which moves and feels like a natural breast.
According to Dr. Dennis Hurwitz, clinical professor of plastic surgery, and pioneer of the technique, of the more than 100 patients on which he’s performed this technique, most were satisfied with the results. 15, however, did asked for further enlargement with breast implants later.
It should be noted that this technique is only optimal on a fraction of cosmetic breast surgery patients, Those with extremely flattened breasts, mostly due to massive weight loss, are the best candidates for the spiral flap procedure. Most patients will best get the results they seek through breast augmentation, breast lift or a combination of both procedures.
