So you have finally decided to get a ‘boob job’. And you’ve been worrying about what’s the right size for you, thanks to all that you heard and read about women going through multiple surgeries to get their ‘size’ corrected and not to mention the amount of time spend finding the ‘right’ surgeon. But who knows better than your surgeon?
With the size of breast implants varying from 100cc to 1000cc anyone would get overwhelmed by the options available to them. Normally women prefer to choose the mid range which is 300cc to 400cc. Surgeons check the diameter and the height of the breast implant to determine the shape and the projection of the breast.
Again here you have different options to choose from. It all comes down to the fact that getting the right implant size is not as easy as it sounds. And of course you can’t go around telling your doctor, “Just get me boobs like Angelina Jolie.”
Surgeons advise that the implant should be the correct volume in order to get you to the size you aspire from the size you are to begin with. If you are a woman with a 34B you will need a bigger implant to achieve a 34D than a woman who begins with a 34C. But you need not wait to make this decision until you’re facing surgery – you ought to be able to know in advance what your size will actually look to avoid the psychological turmoil you go through after the surgery.
Here’s where the Natrelle® Pre-Consultation Kit comes to your rescue. It comes with implants, a sizing bra and educational DVDs that will show you how to try on the implants and decide on the right size for you. You don’t even have to visit the doctor’ office, you can do it all in the privacy of your home. What more do you need?
The Natrelle® Pre-Consultation Kit can help women carry on their day-to-day tasks while wearing the scientifically-designed tester implants. It’s way better than other tests like the “rice test”. So why not get primed with the right information before you visit your doctor and create results that make you happy.
Order this intimate, at-home sizing system at www.natrelle.com/kit and get ready for that curvy, sexy look you always wanted.

Recently, the Daily Cancer News published an article about breast implant safety, including common myths, a history of the safety debate, and possible implant complications.
Common brest implant myths mentioned in the article include:
- Breast implants cause cancer
- Breast implants cause other diseases
- Breast implants make breast-feeding hazardous
These myths have all been shown to be false according to the article.
The debate over the safety of silicone breast implants began during the 1980s, when medical journals began to pose connections between silicone implants and such diseases as rheumatoid arthritis, fibromyalgia, scleroderma, and lupus. In 1992, the FDA banned the use of silicone implants (except in certain urgent-need situations) until further research on their side effects could be studied.
In 1999, a panel of 13 scientists reviewed all existing information on silicone implant safety and found no direct causal connection between them and disease. In 2006, the FDA lifted the ban on silicone implants.
Though silicone implants are the popular choice for breast augmentation due to their more natural look and feel than saline implants can offer, the risk of rupture is still a concern. Some recommend women with silicone implants undergo routine screenings to check for implant ruptures.
Another common complication of both saline and silicone implants is capsular contracture, a condition where scar tissue surrounds the implant which can cause pain, hardening and distortion of shape. Revision surgery can be performed to correct this condition.

Recently, a study published by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons looked at whether genetic or environmental factors play a bigger role in how old we appear. Conducted by Dr. Bahaman Guyuron of University Hospitals Case Medical Center, the study looked at 186 pairs of identical twins and compared their appearance and environmental factors through questionnaires and digital images.
“In this study, we looked at identical twins because they are genetically programmed to age exactly the same, and in doing so we essentially discovered that, when it comes to your face, it is possible to cheat your biological clock,” said Dr. Bahaman.
The study showed the twins who had been through divorce appeared approximately two years older than those who had not. Anti-depressant use and weight were also shown to make an impact on how old the subjects looked. Those who used anti-depressants were perceived as looking older than those who did not. This is attributed to sagging cause the relaxation of facial muscles due to anti-depressant use.
As far as the subjects’ weight is concerned, in those younger than 40, the heavier subjects were perceived as looking older, while the reverse was true in those older than 40. This research is said to show that volume replacement is a key to successful facial rejuvenation.
Weight loss, though a healthy for most, can negatively affect a person’s appearance in both the face, breasts and body, especially in those over 40 who may no longer have the skin elasticity to compensate. In these instances, facial volume replacement, through fillers and fat transfer can help, as well as body lift techniques, tummy tucks and breast lift and/or breast augmentation. Baltimore plastic surgeon, Dr. Cohen, offers facial rejuvenation as well as breast and body procedures to those wishing to turn back the hands of time at his plastic surgery center in Maryland. Though “cheating your biological clock” by controlling ones environment seems like a great idea, avoiding factors such as divorce, weight loss, stress or anti-depressant use isn’t a plausable option for many. Learning how to counteract the effects those factors play on our appearance, however, is getting easier and easier all the time through the advancement of surgical and non-surgical techniques.

One of the many difficult parts of breast reconstruction after mastectomy is reconstructing realistic-looking nipples and areolas. Finding ways to create permanent, natural-looking color has been a challenge for reconstructive surgeons over the years. Tattooing is one common method of nipple reconstruction. Another is grafting skin from other regions, such as the groin or the remaining areola. Over time, however, the nipple color from these methods tends to fade, leaving researchers looking for a new solution.
Now, Australian researcher, Dr Nicola Dean is experimenting with ways to grow pigmented skin in a petri dish. She has succeeded in growing “pigmented skin construct” in the lab, but says that, as of yet, it has not been tried on a patient. And it is not yet known whether the cells in the transplanted skin could become cancerous.
As of yet, this new technique is still in its infancy but offers promise for the future.

In these difficult financial times, finding ways to cut corners is becoming a fact of life, even in plastic surgery. While many plastic surgery patients are dealing with the downturn by choosing temporary non-surgical treatments, such a Botox and derma fillers for rejuvenation, the American Society of Plastic Surgeons worries others may cut corners in more hazardous ways, by turning to less expensive, and possibly less skilled, plastic surgeons for procedures like tummy tucks, liposcution and breast enhancement. “The worst thing patients can do” according to the ASPS, “is put price before professional training.”
Because elective medical financing institutions are tightening their purse strings and lending less money for cosmetic procedures, plastic surgeons of all caliber may resort to offering some sort of bargain or incentive to bring more business in. And there’s no harm in taking advantage of these specials if you’re sure price isn’t driving your decision. Just like in more robust economic times, your choice of plastic surgeon or plastic surgery facility should be based on credentials and quality of care offered rather than price. In the end, the cost of revision surgery and medical complications can add up to way more than a procedure performed initially by a skilled surgeon. And we all know there’s absolutely no bargain in living with shoddy plastic surgery results.
Just like in good economic times, the key to getting the most bang from your breast augmentation buck is careful pre-op consultation to ensure your results are what you want. New Jersey breast augmentation surgeon Dr. Paul Parker may not offer 20% off deals or free skin treatments with every breast surgery, but he does offer careful patient consultation, as well as sizing consultations using implant sizers and digital imaging to achieve the best results possible the first time around. By offering these state-of-the-art sizing consultations, patient satisfaction with breast augmentation results have increased. Its been estimated that approximately 30% of patients seeking breast augmentation revision do so due to miscalculation of implant size choice.

Massive weight loss, age and multiple pregnancies can sometimes make breasts more than just saggy– but flat. In cases like these, special measures are needed to plump those breasts back up again. Breast implants alone aren’t the answer, since their purpose is to add volume, not to address excess skin. But a new technique called the spiral flap may offer a “no implant” answer.
The procedure uses unwanted fat from other areas of the body, such as the abdomen, and forms it into a new breast mound. The breast mound is held into place with a sling-like tissue sheet or “spiral flap” which moves and feels like a natural breast.
According to Dr. Dennis Hurwitz, clinical professor of plastic surgery, and pioneer of the technique, of the more than 100 patients on which he’s performed this technique, most were satisfied with the results. 15, however, did asked for further enlargement with breast implants later.
It should be noted that this technique is only optimal on a fraction of cosmetic breast surgery patients, Those with extremely flattened breasts, mostly due to massive weight loss, are the best candidates for the spiral flap procedure. Most patients will best get the results they seek through breast augmentation, breast lift or a combination of both procedures.

According to a recent web seminar hosted by the American Society of Plastic Surgeons, many women who undergo mastectomies are not properly informed of their breast reconstruction options. Though approximately 78,000 women in the U.S. undergo mastectomies each year, in 2007, only 57,100 underwent breast reconstruction as well. Though it’s true, breast reconstruction is not an option all women choose when given the opportunity, others say they merely aren’t being fully informed of their options.
Mandated by federal law since 1998, breast reconstruction after mastectomy is now covered through health insurance. And numerous reconstruction options exist making most women viable candidates. Still, according to a study conducted by the University of Michigan Medical Center, Ann Arbor, providers in some parts of the country are doing a “poor job in informing women of their options.”
Today, numerous breast reconstruction options exist. The most popular uses silicone breast implants and tissue expanders, while other options, such as flap techniques, us the patient’s own fat, skin, and tissue to rebuild the breast for a more natural look and feel. For many women, breast reconstruction can begin immediately at the time of the mastectomy, sparing her emotional trauma by allowing her to awake with a new breast mound already in place. But according to the Ann Arbor study, many women aren’t being offered access to a plastic surgeon before their mastectomy.
In fact, Houston plastic surgeon Dr. Bob Basu says many of his patients seek him out years after their mastectomies, saying they’d never known the reconstructive options he offers were even available to them at the time of their diagnosis. Dr. Basu, who specailizes in advanced breast reconstructive techniques, says, luckily, it’s never too late to explore ones options for breast reconstruction. But ideally, those options should be at least offered to the women as early as possible, so they can consider them before their initial cancer surgeries.

According to reality star Tamra Barney, when it comes to breast implant sizing, bigger is not always better. Earlier this year, Tamra Barney from Bravo TV’s “The Real Housewives of Orange County” sought breast augmentation revision from prominent Orange County plastic surgeon Dr. Milind Ambe. Now 40, Barney had long decided the implants she’d gotten in her 20’s were too large for her body’s small frame. According to her blog on bravotv.com, the large implants made it difficult for her to find clothing and bathing suits that fit. And after multiple pregnancies, her breast’s natural support tissue had stretched, no longer supporting the heavy implants properly.
“Imagine wearing a heavy backpack all day long that was too loose. I constantly used my shoulders and back to compensate, which lead to neck and back pain.”
Ms. Barney initially just wanted the implants removed all together, but in consultation with Dr. Ambe, decided on a lift combined with smaller implants. They decided that making a shift from very large implants to no implants, combined with the amount of natural breast tissue lost over time, seemed like too drastic a change. Through careful consultation, Tamra and Dr. Ambe created a surgical plan that worked.
“I’m so thrilled with my outcome, I just wish I would have had it done sooner.” says Tamra. “I’m sure there are a lot of women out there in their 40s that have breast implants they don’t want anymore… I highly recommend removing them and replacing them with smaller implants.”
According to Dr. Ambe, careful consultation is the key, believing patients and surgeons need to listen to each other more carefully.
“I find that sometimes patients tell me exactly what they want done, thinking they know how a procedure will make them look and feel. I would much rather start by discussing their issues and goals, then evaluate the options. Many times we end up planning a procedure that’s slightly different than the one they thought they should have. That’s why these appointments are called ‘consultations’.”

Keira Knightley is taking a stand against digital enhancement of her breasts on publicity photos for her upcoming film The Dutchess. Though studio heads would like to see her breasts digitally plumped in the photos, Keira says they’ll stay as they are, naturally flat.
In 2004 her breasts were digitally enhanced for publicity shots for the film King Arthur. Posed with drawn bow and arrow, Knightley is shown sporting a digitally plumped-up C cup rather than her own smaller breasts. The enhancements received criticism from many fans who cried foul, liking her as she is.
The enhanced archer photo may go to show that the movie industry could take a few archery tips from the ancient Amazons. The legendary female warriors discovered when it comes to archery, breasts just get in the way, and are said to have surgically removed their left breasts to improve their bow and arrow prowess. Of course, something else the Amazons have shown is that women have been tinkering with their breast size, either surgically, digitally, or through carefully constructed undergarments practically since the beginning of time for one reason or another.
In today’s times, where voluptuous breasts tend to trump archery skills, it’s refreshing to see an actress take a stand against imposed breast enhancement, digital, surgical or otherwise. Breast size should remain a personal choice. Variety should indeed remain the spice of life. And we should all step back and remember that even in the movies, larger doesn’t have to equal better.
Breast enhancement is a personal choice and should not be done to please other’s taste or expectations. If you have questions or concerns about breast enhancement, or would like to explore your cosmetic options, Baltimore cosmetic surgeon Dr. Cohen and his staff will be glad to answer your questions through a personalized consultation.
